PGA DFS Showdown Picks: Wyndham Championship Round 2

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

For much of the day, sunny skies and perfect temperatures led to expectedly lower scores. But, around 5:00 local time, summer afternoon storms rolled through the area and put a two-hour delay in play. Round 1 would not officially finish on the day, but it would for Russell Henley, who shot a blistering round of 62, gaining strokes through his entire bag. The three golfers closest to him from this wave are a bit out of left field, as Ted Potter, Michael Thompson and Sung Kang, who have a combined zero top 10s since early April, all shot 64 on the day. Kang. Like Henley, gained throughout the bag while Thompson and Potter’s booth had a spot of trouble in their games.

Notables

Will Zalatoris and Matthew Wolff were two of the more prominent names in this wave, with Wolff making 17 pars and a birdie, while Zalatoris couldn’t quite get things started shooting a two-under 68. Jhonttan Vegas continued his hot form in round one, with a five-under 65, while Sebastian Munoz got into position with a 66 of his own. Adam Scott would join Munoz in shooting 66 on Thursday, needing a big week to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scott has given himself a chance after the first round, as did Matt Kuchar, who also came in with a 66.

PM Wave

Before the horn blowing, scores were starting to creep up towards the eight-under number. Tommy Fleetwood and Si Woo Kim looked poised to post good scores, but a few bogeys on their inward holes, and they both finished at 66 on the day. However, Adam Hadwin was making a late-day runwho has been feast or famine lately in his results. The play would be called around 8:15, with just about four holes remaining for the golfers still on the course.

Notables

Justin Rose started his tournament off in a terrible fashion, but as true champions do bounce back and give the 2021 Payne Stewart Award winner a chance to qualify for the playoffs. Erik Van Rooyen, fresh off his first-ever PGA Tour win at the Barracuda, was able to continue the good form in round one, gaining strokes through his bag, including 2.35 with his putter, and posted a five-under 65. Chris Kirk, Scott Piercy and Hudson Swafford all shot 64 on Thursday and are the closest competitors to Henely from the afternoon wave. At least at the conclusion of play, as Hadwin still has a few holes left in his first round.

Wyndham Championship Round 2 PGA DFS Picks

Sedgefield doesn’t have much protection on it, other than the above-average green size, and is complex and thus relinquishes plenty of low scores. With not much length to it either, golfers that gain most of their strokes off the tee struggled to get inside the top 10, with just two of the top 20 ranked golfers in strokes gained off the tee in round one ended up in the top 10. The lowest of any strokes gained stat.

  • Tommy Fleetwood ($8,600): One of two golfers on this list for the second round that really needs a big week this week. Fleetwood found form in round one, mostly with his putter. But, funny enough, his two bogey’s came on two three-putts, but outside of those, he putted superbly. He hit 17/18 greens, only missing one of the days, and is down almost $1100 from his week-long salary.
  • Si Woo Kim ($8,500): A former champion of the event, Si Woo is either a missed cut or a top 5 here at Sedgefield. He seems to be in a good place right now, gaining strokes throughout his bag, a great sign for Kim.  Similarly to Fleetwood, his price decreased about $600 from his week-long salary, a great time to jump on him before it moves back up after a stellar Friday round.
  • Justin Rose ($7,600)A former FedEx Cup Champion in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the first time in quite a while, Rose had a tough start to his campaign, bogeying the first two holes. But, an eagle and four other birdies would get him to four under for the day and in a position to make a last-second playoff push.

Sneaky Pick for the Wyndham Championship Round 2 Showdown

  • Adam Hadwin ($6,800)Hadwin’s volatile play has yielded a few top 10s and a bunch of missed cuts. Typically when he’s gotten into contention, it’s been after a good first and second round. We’ve got that started here this week, and he’ll even get a bit of a warmup with two holes left before he starts his second round. Nothing like a warmup to get things going. I also like Francesco Molinari quite a bit for Friday’s slate.
