PGA One and Done Picks: Top Golfers for The Charles Schwab Challenge | Emiliano Grillo

The PGA Tour heads from Kiawah Island back to Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge. This event isn’t going to bring the eyeballs or interest that a major does, but for One and Done the mindset doesn’t change. There are still significant paydays for top finishers, and weeks like this can be more important with the field lesser known to the general public. Finding the right low-owned PGA One and Done pick can turn the whole season around, like those who came up with Phil Mickelson last week were able to do.

What is a One and Done pool?

A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.

PGA Championship Recap

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele is one of the more consistent players on tour, and his all-around game should have been a solid fit for Kiawah island. Unfortunately, the wind and layout did not suit him, and the result was a rare missed cut. That was a big missed opportunity, as majors present a lot of cash and getting $0 leaves a significant hole. Long term, there are no worries about Schauffele’s game; it was just the wrong spot to deploy him.

Jon Rahm

Rahm is still searching for a breakthrough, and he will have to wait a little longer. He managed to find the weekend, and despite never being in the hunt, his closing 68 vaulted him all the way into the top 10. That is not great, but the $263,000 payday will help alleviate some of the missed opportunities. Mickelson winning made the top prize inaccessible to anyone in One and Done, so Rahm’s payout does not seem so bad.

Joaquin Niemann

Niemann has been consistent all year, having not missed a cut during the 2021 campaign. He leans on ball striking, and that once again was his plan last week. He was able to find the weekend, but a tough Sunday — particularly around the green — landed him in the middle of the pack at 30th. The $59,000 payday is disappointing, but the positive spin is that he is not a top-tier player. That will pay dividends later in the year as choosing golfers becomes more difficult.

Charles Schwab Challenge One and Done Picks

Tony Finau

Typically Colonial Country Club has not been a bomber’s track. However, there are opportunities to be aggressive, and golfers that go that route can have a ton of wedges into these greens. Finau has the length off the tee to shorten these holes, and that should be his strategy here. He is coming off another quality result with his eighth-place finish last week, and his game should translate well.

Given that Colonial is more of a second-shot course, most people will look elsewhere up top. He is probably not available for most One and Done players, so using him here can create leverage on a few different levels. Finau is eventually going to get this winning drought taken care of, and this is another week where he should be in the hunt come Sunday.

Emiliano Grillo

Unlike Finau, most probably have Grillo available. Grillo isn’t a top-tier player, but he is in form, having made four of five cuts. The finishes are a result of his iron play, which is the strength of his game. At a course that doesn’t demand distance, this should play right into his hands, giving him an opportunity to contend.

The wild card with Grillo is his putter, but the same could be said for dozens of players in this field. Lately Grillo’s putting numbers have been excellent relative to what how he normally performs, and Grillo has gained in three of his last four on the greens. If that continues, he will continue to be underpriced in DFS and is in the conversation as a One and Done pick this week.

Gary Woodland

There are a few top-tier players in this field, but it’s a big opportunity cost to target them in this spot. The goal this week should be to find a few guys that are in that next tier of players, as the win equity is less concentrated at the very top. Gary Woodland fits that criteria, and even though he can be aggressive off the tee, he seems to benefit at courses that allow some club-downs.

Woodland has had an up-and-down 2021 season, but his form is starting to show some real progress. Following his fifth-place finish at Wells Fargo where he gained across the board, he finished 38th last week at Kiawah Island. The middling result isn’t great, but he gained 6.1 strokes on the approach. If his irons continue to be dialed in, the rest of the game should follow. Like Grillo, it is unlikely Woodland has been used already, so it’s an easy click that won’t have major repercussions later in the season.

Charles Schwab Challenge PGA One and Done Pick: Emiliano Grillo

After last week, a roll of the dice is needed. Grillo may not be among the favorites in this tournament, but historically Colonial has had plenty of non-PGA Tour superstars holding the trophy on Sunday. Grillo has gained an insane seven strokes or more on the approach in three of his last four tournaments. He has plenty of experience at this event, and the third-place finish in 2018 shows he can contend here when his game is right. Nailing a low-owned One and Done winner can turn the whole season around, and that’s the plan here with this pick at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
