KBO DFS: Spotlight Hitters for DraftKings + FanDuel | May 24

Tonight’s slate should be wall to wall scoring for KBO DFS owners. If you’re looking for tonight’s pitching overview, head over to Spotlight Pitchers, where I broke things down and gave a few choice picks earlier in the day.

Every now and then things just go to plan. With Doosan and Kiwoom both exploding for 10 and 12 runs respectively, last night was one of those nights for anyone using Awesemo’s projections. Aligning the correct Bears and Heroes stacks paid off for a lot of subscribers and friends of the column last night, hopefully you were one of them.

Those same two teams are looking at gargantuan run totals again tonight, with each increasing from yesterday. With a ton of great options that click together well in constructions the Doosan-Kiwoom combination is going to be ludicrously popular on both sites again tonight. Is eating some chalk the best way to go again tonight? Let’s take a look.

The bulk of this analysis comes directly from reviewing Awesemo’s KBO DFS projections and the top stacks tool. Check out the rest of our KBO content, Awesemo’s projections, rankings, and ownership on the site for all your KBO DFS needs.

As usual, I’m going to look game by game, calling out a hitter or two from each team, and giving some top stacking options as we go. Pricing and popularity will be considered, more so as KBO DFS trends begin to emerge over the coming weeks. The numbers included with Suggested Stack are the projected lineup positions I would target for stacking that team, but do not restrict yourself exclusively to those spots. For example, if it says Wyverns 3-6 it means 3,4,5,6 in the projected lineup. If it says 1-2-3-5 it means those guys. If it means a two-man it will say so. I’m also going to start trying to include positions more, hopefully it helps speed up the process of finding guys as you build lineups.

With lock still hours away (1:00am), official lineups have not been released, so be sure to double-check status before you plug players into your lineup. Clouds for the NC game but doesn’t look like any real threat of rain. Double-check before lock just in case.

KBO DFS Picks: Hitting Breakdown for DraftKings + FanDuel

Hanwha Eagles @ NC Dinos – 9.0 run total (3.77/5.45) – Suggested Stack: Dinos 1-4

The Eagles draw another quality import starter tonight, facing Mike Wright. With the slate’s lowest implied run total there’s not much to like about Hanwha here a day after they were shut down for a huge performance by Dinos’ starter Drew Rucinski. The Eagles are unlikely to be popular tonight and offer KBO DFS owners very few options. At the two-man salary totals on both sites, there should be some contrarian value in just getting to Jared Hoying ($11/$4.8k) and Sung-yeol Lee ($9/$3.2k), who are easily the two most capable hitters in this lineup every night.

The Dinos are facing sloppy starter Shi-hwan Jang tonight and should see plenty of opportunities to put runs on the board, which could be good for this squad who have been scuffling a bit this week outside of a 9-run 9th inning on Thursday vs. the Doosan bullpen. The Dinos look like a great option on FanDuel, where they are going under-owned compared to their probability of being the night’s top stack. This is leveled-out on DraftKings, but they are a good play regardless. The heart of this order is familiar and relevant, star catcher Eui-ji Yang ($13/$5.2k) is several dollars too cheap on FanDuel for his talent, and the ownership is reasonable. On DraftKings he will be more widely owned however, so looking to your other stack for your catcher may be the sharper play.  Projected leadoff hitter Min-woo Park ($13/$4.4k) is affordable and under-owned on both sites.

Kia Tigers @ SK Wyverns – 10 run total (5.44/4.77) – Suggested Stack: Tigers 2-3-4-5

Kia popped for KBO DFS owners who got to them last night, hanging 8 runs on the Wyverns pitching staff. With another solid implied run total against a starting pitcher who isn’t intimidating anyone, the Tigers look to be in another great spot here, and they rank 3rd on the stacking tool for both sites. The Tigers moved the powerful bat of Ji-wan Na ($7/$3.3k) into the cleanup spot last night against a left-handed starter, swapping him with their usual cleanup hitter, the left-handed Hyung-woo Choi ($12/$5.2k). In either order these two make a great home run hitting duo, look good in Awesemo’s projections, and should be a part of Kia stacks, but they will be popular. 2-hitter Sun-bin Kim ($9/$3.9k) is cheap and projecting for low ownership on both sites.

The Wyverns lineup continues to mostly just suck. With a bottom-3 ranking in the top stacks tool, and some ugly projections, there’s not much to talk about. Jamie Romak ($12/$6.3k) is only tracking around 5% ownership on DraftKings because of his insane price. On FanDuel he’ll be more popular. Speedy outfielder Soo-kwang Noh ($6/$3.2k) is projected to lead off and can always impact scoring with his ability to get on base and steal a bag.

KT Wiz @ LG Twins – 10 run total (5.04/5.18) – Suggested Stack: Twins 2-5

The rubber match of a good series looks like one of the better matchups on the slate. Odds-makers like this one to be close with both teams just barely edging over 5 implied runs. With both teams ranking in the bottom half of Awesemo’s top stacks tool it might not be the spot KBO DFS owners want to look tonight, however. The Wiz offer one obvious option in the heart of their lineup, Mel Rojas Jr. ($15/$6.1k) just looks like a guy playing at a higher level in the KBO. He will be extremely popular and is pricey on both sites, but he has one of the highest hitting projections tonight.

The Twins might be a bit overlooked tonight. This is where understanding the top stacks tool can be helpful. Despite ranking in the bottom half of stacks overall, the Twins are still carrying around a 7.5% chance to be the top stack, but project to be only around 3.5% owned. 7.5% chance of being the top stack may seem low, but the 3rd ranked Kia Tigers stack is only 11%, so perspective is very important here. With their suppressed ownership options like current home run leader Roberto Ramos ($16/$3.4k) and Eun-sung Chae ($12/$2.5k) in the heart of this order have some appeal even against a pitcher who is probably better than he’s looked so far this season.

Doosan Bears @ Samsung Lions – 12 run total (7.22/5.08) – Suggested Stack: Bears 2-3-4-6 (FD) / 9-1-2-3-4 (DK)

If this series were continuing for a few more days, we’d be around a 15-run total by Wednesday’s slate. This Doosan team just knows how to score runs. After they had the season’s highest implied total going into last night, the Bears go even higher tonight against gas can David Buchanan. The Bears are drawing an insane amount of ownership on both sites, they rank easily as the top stack across the board and are probably going to be good chalk again here. Eventually something has to give, but I think the Bears are likely to give KBO DFS owners another good night here. The entire top half of the lineup is going to be popular, working in someone like 6th-hitting infielder Kyoung-min “don’t call me Ben” Hur ($8/$2.7k) at his 7% ownership on FanDuel could have tournament winning upside. On DraftKings this is a taller order, with only the bottom two hitters in the lineup currently pulling under 25% ownership. Of the two I would probably look to Ji-hyeok Ryu ($5/$2.1k) hitting 9th in a wraparound to the top of the lineup.

FanDuel is really trying to tempt us into playing some Samsung Lions. The value presented by an entire lineup priced at $9 or under is beginning to outweigh concerns about their talent and matchup. The Lions best hitter Ja-wook Koo ($9/$4.5k) is tracking to be popular on both sites, but everyone else in this lineup will also be low-owned on FanDuel. Things are a bit less shiny on DraftKings but the Lions still have some contrarian appeal. Outfielder Dong-yeop Kim ($9/$2.9k) is projected to hit 4th and has tremendous value on both sites with the home run upside he provides. I don’t like the Lions in general, but this spot has some appeal.

Kiwoom Heroes @ Lotte Giants – 11 run total (6.73/4.55) – Suggested Stack: Heroes 2-5 (FD) / 2-3-4-5-7 (DK)

The Heroes also lived up to their big run total last night and were similarly rewarded with an increased total going into today’s action. The Giants starter here is 19 and most of the times you run this game he’s going to come up not ready for the challenge. The Heroes lineup should feast here, they rank 2nd in the top stacks tool, and will be very popular again. Cleanup hitter Byung-ho Park ($12/$5.1k) is going to inspire me to write an email to FanDuel if they don’t start increasing his price. Pulling around 50% ownership on that site he’s almost unplayable just on variance alone. However, he is carrying Awesemo’s highest individual hitter projection on the night and is set to smash like Bruce Banner 30 seconds after stubbing a toe. On FanDuel, catcher Dong-won Park ($8/$4.2k) is drawing playable levels of ownership, he has positional popularity again on DraftKings, however. KBO DFS players looking for a low-owned option on that site might consider aging outfielder Taek-kun Lee ($8/$2.2k) who is only tracking around 8%, and provides a capable veteran stick from lower in the lineup.

With the slate’s second lowest implied run total by ½ a run, the Giants are second from the bottom in the top stacks tool tonight and don’t offer us much. Ownership under 10% for all players across both sites does have some contrarian appeal, however, so we don’t want to completely cross the Giants off. Projected 5th-hitter Chi-hong An ($10/$2.5k) is an infielder with a lot of pop in his bat, at those prices and virtually no ownership he should be involved in the bulk of your Giants stacks tonight.
