Bryce Harper — OF — Philadelphia Phillies
Harper will look to put the Phillies on his back in a game they desperately need, sitting 3.5 games behind the first-place Braves in the NL East. Today’s matchup against the Rockies means that he gets to face right-hander Ryan Feltner in his second career MLB start. In his debut Feltner allowed five hits and six runs over 2.2 innings in a 9-2 loss to the Braves. Feltner allowed three home runs in his lone start, and Harper has homered in three of his last four games. In the month of September Harper has hit safely in all but one game. There is still an outside chance of winning National League MVP, albeit not a very good one. However, Harper is a quality stock, as the Phillies need every single win they can get down the stretch. If Philadelphia does have a big day offensively, it is wise to believe that Harper will have a big helping hand in the effort.
Vladimir Guerrero — OF — Toronto Blue Jays
Guerrero is coming off a 3-for-8 night at the plate between the two games in the doubleheader, with one of those being a home run. Today’s matchup against the Orioles is a good one, as he will be facing left-hander Zac Lowther before the MLB’s worst bullpen takes over. Lowther has pitched often at home, but he is allowing a 7.43 ERA and 1.58 at Camden Yards in his short career. The Blue Jays have the highest implied team total (6.8) by an entire run today over the next closest team. It is not a wild idea to back Toronto today considering it hung 11 runs in each of the two games during the doubleheader yesterday. In addition to having the great matchup against the left-handed starting pitcher, the Blue Jays will be facing a bullpen that had a great deal of work yesterday, even in the shortened seven-inning games.
Bryan Reynolds — OF — Pittsburgh Pirates
Reynolds is the best hitter the Pirates have against left-handed pitching, so today’s matchup against Patrick Corbin should be profitable. Reynolds is the best hitter Pittsburgh has in its lineup, but today should be extra special. He has hit safely in each of the last four games and went 2-for-3 last night with a home run, three RBIs and two walks. Corbin has been awful on the road this season, going 2-7 with a 6.42 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. While PNC Park is not exactly a hitter’s haven, opposing hitters have been hitting him well in any fashion. It is also not a huge shocker, but 32 of the 34 home runs that Corbin has allowed this season have come against right-handed batters.
