Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks
Atlanta Braves at RHP Tony Gonsolin – 3.3 implied runs
UPDATE: Clayton Kershaw has been scratched with back spasms, RHP Tony Gonsolin will be making the start instead. This puts Freddie Freeman at the forefront of options, Nick Markakis also comes into play at the bottom of the lineup. Even switching from a southpaw to a righty, I am still good with the rest of the Bravos. In this matchup we are looking more for one-off plays or duos depending on how adjacent our desired hitters are to each other in the batting order. The low 3.3 implied run total as well as the cache of the Kershaw brand should have gamers looking to avoid Atlanta batsmen. Keep in mind this is a two-game slate and the leverage opportunity going directly against the most popular pitcher on the slate has merit.
A pairing of Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna at the top of the order is the most viable since they should have a good chance at five at bats. The heart of the order with Ozuna, Travis d’Arnaud and switch-hitting Ozzie Albies is the next grouping we can choose from. Finally, with Adam Duvall likely done after being injured last night, Cristian Pache becomes a super discount dandy, particularly at $2,100 on DraftKings. The youngster has a little pop and a little speed, but only four MLB at bats under his belt.
Tampa Bay Rays at RHP Jose Urquidy – 4.3 implied runs
Keep in mind the playoffs are now at neutral sites with the Astros and Rays playing at Petco Park. The Braves and Dodgers are playing in Globe Life Park tonight — which has been a pitcher’s park in the inaugural season.
The last time we saw Urquidy, he was allowing four solo home runs to the Oakland Athletics on Oct. 7. Two righties and two lefties did the damage. In his limited time in The Show against 139 same-handed hitters Urquidy has a 1.69 HR/9 with a .195 ISO and 144 lefties have compiled a 0.93 HR/9 with a limited .100 ISO.
Our first targets should be the trio of lefties in the top half of the Rays lineup with Austin Meadows, Brandon Lowe and Ji-Man Choi all boasting a .225+ ISO since the beginning of the 2018 season in opposite-handed matchups. At the bottom of the lineup we can look to Kevin Kiermaier, who continues to be overlooked by gamers, even on these short slate. Mike Zunino is a home run threat with every swing and of course a strike out candidate as well. He is fine as part of a wrap-around stack for differentiation as well as on sites requiring us to roster a backstop.
