Big tournaments continue to be on the schedule for the PGA Tour, with the 2022 Genesis Invitational ready to begin this week. Similar to last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, plenty of the world’s best are in the field, making this a premier early-season tournament. That provides a lot of big names to consider and a lot of money up for grabs for PGA One and Done.
PGA One and Done Golf Picks: 2022 Genesis Invitational
What is a One and Done pool?
A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that players cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week players have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become points for the player. The same player cannot be used twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning earns a strong payoff. Pools will pay several spots, depending on it is size, similar to a GPP structure from DFS golf.
Waste Management Phoenix Open One and Done Recap
Scottie Scheffler
The One and Done pick in last week’s article came through in a big way. Scottie Scheffler had a massive weekend to get into contention and finally broke through for his first win on the PGA Tour in a playoff. The ball striking and overall talent have always been there for Scheffler, but getting the $1.4 million payout for One and Done was a huge effort for any Scheffler backers.
Jon Rahm
Anytime Jon Rahm is in the field he is certainly a strong choice for One and Done. That is the tough part about his 10th-place finish, which netted $200,000, as Rahm is going to be on the leaderboard in the majority of events this year. Not having him available after only getting a few hundred thousand is a disappointment for One and Done.
Xander Schauffele
Another top-end player who found himself in the mix last week, Xander Schauffele ultimately finished third after a decent charge on Sunday, and the $434,000 he took home has to be considered a win in One and Done. However, given the fact he was among the leaders throughout the tournament, it is reasonable to expect him to take down the seven-figure payday. Like Rahm, it is never good to have him unavailable, but the quality result makes that easier to take.

2022 Genesis Invitational PGA One and Done Golf Picks This Week
Rory McIlroy
There are no bad events to use Rory McIlroy, so it is just a matter of either saving him or using him early in the season. He has not performed on the PGA Tour much lately, but his results in Europe show his game is strong. McIlroy is a dominant driver of the ball and has the tools to deal with Riviera Country Club’s tough test. Most people will wait on using McIlroy, which gives him sneaky upside.
Xander Schauffele
Xander Schauffele is playing quality golf every single tournament, and he finished third a week ago. The lack of wins has been concerning, but his all-around game shows it is just a matter of time before Schauffele breaks through again. Coming off a week where he gained 13 strokes tee to green, it makes perfect sense to ride the hot form with a One and Done selection this week.
Collin Morikawa
Riviera and the strong field mean it is best to target some of the top players in the World Golf Rankings. Collin Morikawa is a premier iron player who lost 7.5 strokes putting last year at the Genesis Invitational, which masked what should have been a much better finishing position. On the PGA Tour Morikawa has three straight top-10s dating back to late 2021, and his approach numbers take the pressure off what could be tough around-the-green conditions. If not saving Morikawa for major season, this is a fine spot for him.
2022 Genesis Invitational One and Done Golf Pick: Collin Morikawa
All three options above are pretty safe choices, but Morikawa does not seem like a great play for majors later this year, and this column has been conservative with high-end players to start the season. As such, targeting Morikawa here leaves plenty of guys for the bigger tournaments later in the season. Coming off the Scheffler win, the goal here is to rack up quality finishes and secure a good spot heading into March. With Morikawa’s tee-to-green game among the strongest on tour and some experience at this event, checks all the boxes for a One and Done pick this week.
