Rams Non-Committal On Sony Michel's Role Moving Forward

When asked if he sees running back Sony Michel taking on a lead-back role, regardless of Darrell Henderson's (thigh) health, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was non-committal. "I think it's really good to get Sony going. I think he's a rhythm runner, but I think we definitely would want to find ways to still have Darrell as a big part of it," McVay said. Michel got his second start of the season as Henderson looked on from the sideline in the Week 13 drubbing of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he produced a season-high 121 rushing yards and his second rushing touchdown of the season on 24 carries. Perhaps Michel earned some more work once Henderson is ready to return, but it seems unlikely that the Rams would just give up Henderson's lead-back role that easily after Henderson has been solid in 10 games -- career-high 4.6 yards per carry, 648 rushing yards and eight total TDs). Michel will most likely only retain standalone RB2 value if Henderson misses more time.

Sony Michel Shines In Week 13

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel took the field as the team's starter and he put up a strong performance in Week 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Michel had 24 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three of his four targets for eight yards. When given the chance to be the starter for this team, Michel has been solid for fantasy managers, and this week was no different with Darrell Henderson Jr. (hamstring) beat up. If Henderson continues to miss time, Michel is firmly in the RB2 category on a weekly basis.

Dec 5th · 06:18 PM
Sony Michel To Be Featured Over Darrell Henderson

Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson Jr. (thigh) is expected to play on Sunday against the Jaguars, but Sony Michel will play the feature role for the team, according to FOX's Jay Glazer. Henderson was looking doubtful over the past few days and you've probably already removed him from your fantasy lineups. You can keep him on the bench unless you need an emergency option. As for Michel, this lowers his upside, though if he really is the lead back, he's still an RB2 option.

Dec 4th · 09:16 PM
Sony Michel - Week 13 Outlook for Fantasy Football

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel has been relegated to the RB2 role for most of the season, but he could have fantasy value in Week 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Teammate Darrell Henderson Jr. (thigh) is dealing with an injury that could cause him to miss this week's game. If that's the case, that would lead to quick fantasy value for Michel. In his lone game of the year as the lead back, Michel saw 23 of the 24 touches for the team's running backs. Jacksonville ranks 14th against the run by DVOA, and in a game the Rams expect to be leading, Michel would see a decent amount of work if Henderson misses the game. If Henderson is ruled out, Michel would quickly enter the RB2 conversation for the week.

Oct 24th · 06:45 PM
Sony Michel Active For Week 7

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel (shoulder) is active for the team's Week 7 contest against the Detroit Lions. Michel has been a clear-cut backup to Darrell Henderson Jr. this season and isn't getting a ton of work, but fantasy managers who are dealing with bye week issues could put Michel in as a desperation flex option and hope that he can find some running room on his limited touches against a weak Lions squad.

Oct 23rd · 04:28 PM
Sony Michel Expected To Play Despite Questionable Designation

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel (shoulder) is expected to play in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions despite having a questionable designation for Sunday's game. Michel was able to practice on a limited basis on Thursday and Friday and should retain backup duties to Darrell Henderson Jr. On the season, Michel has seen only 28.9% of the offensive snaps behind Henderson, and he has single-digit carries in three of his six games so far in 2021. There's a chance that the 26-year-old could see additional work on Sunday if this game turns into a blowout against the winless Lions, but it's hard for fantasy managers to bank on that. As long as he continues to play second fiddle to Henderson, Michel will struggle for standalone value as more of an RB4/flex.

Oct 22nd · 09:41 AM
Sony Michel Limited In Thursday's Practice

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel (shoulder) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice. He missed Wednesday's practice with a shoulder issue and was spotted in a red non-contact jersey on Thursday. The former New England Patriot has rushed for 205 rushing yards and a touchdown while hauling in four passes for 20 yards in his six games in 2021. Michel is the clear backup to Darrell Henderson Jr. and is a borderline flex play at best in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions. Fantasy managers should check Friday's injury report for Michel's official status as the 26-year-old is considered questionable for Week 7.

Oct 21st · 12:02 AM
Sony Michel Misses First Practice Of The Week

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel (shoulder) didn't practice on Wednesday but is still expected to be able to play on Sunday against the winless Detroit Lions. Michel is the clear backup to Darrell Henderson Jr. in the Rams backfield, as he has 54 carries and five targets compared to Henderson's 81 rushing attempts and 16 passing-game targets, and Michel has also played in one more game than Henderson. Michel has 205 rushing yards and a touchdown and has caught four passes for 20 yards in his six games, which makes him a pretty unattractive standalone fantasy asset behind Henderson. However, against a Lions team allowing the most fantasy points per game to RBs this year, is there a chance that Michel sees more work in a potential blowout?

Oct 19th · 01:19 PM
Sony Michel Expected To Play Through His Injury

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel (shoulder) suffered an injury in the team's Week 6 win over the New York Giants, but it is not expected to sideline him at all. Head coach Sean McVay said on Monday when talking to the press that he still expects Michel to suit up for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions in Week 7. With rookie running back Jake Funk (hamstring) being placed on season-ending Injured Reserve, the Rams cannot afford to have Michel be unavailable for any amount of time. Michel remains a premium backup option behind starter Darrell Henderson Jr.

Sep 20th · 02:26 AM
Sony Michel Runs Well In Relief In Week 2

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel saw his first serious action since joining the team in their Week 2 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Teammate Darrell Henderson Jr. (chest) left the game and went to the locker room with an injury in the second half, and that gave Michel a large uptick in workload. He had 10 carries for 46 yards on the day, but he wasn't involved in the passing game at all. If Henderson were to miss any serious time moving forward, Michel would immediately become the leader in this backfield with RB2 potential.

Sep 19th · 01:15 AM
Sony Michel Could Remain An Afterthought

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel could remain in a clear backup role for yet another week. "You have confidence that you can utilize him, if need be," explained head coach Sean McVay. "But Darrell Henderson, I thought, did a great job." This certainly does not sound like a vote of confidence in the former Patriots first-round pick, especially after he logged just one carry for two yards last week. McVay added, "You do want to be able to say, 'Hey, if we're able to sustain drives, be able to get some things off, could you expect to see Sony?' That's a possibility, but Darrell's a guy that's done a really nice job and I was really pleased with how he got stronger as the game went on." Michel doesn't figure to carve out a significant workload soon and thus can safely be left on waivers.

Sep 10th · 02:45 AM
Sony Michel Can Be Avoided In Week 1

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel is a player that could be interesting later this year in fantasy, but he can ride your bench in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. Michel just recently joined the roster, and he figures to be the RB2 in this Rams offense behind Darrell Henderson. The Bears were 14th against the run last season despite missing Akiem Hicks and Eddie Goldman during the year. Until Michel becomes the primary runner or this offense becomes more run-heavy, you can avoid putting him in your fantasy lineups in standard-sized leagues.

Sep 7th · 01:20 PM
Sony Michel Expected To Be Ready For Week 1

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said running back Sony Michel will be ready for the regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears. The Rams reportedly won't know for sure until they put the game plan in Wednesday/Thursday. Michel was traded from the Patriots to the Rams during training camp after the team lost star running back Cam Akers (Achilles) for the season. The 26-year-old could see early-down work and is expected to take some carries away from Darrell Henderson, who is currently dealing with a thumb injury. Michel rushed for 449 yards on 79 carries and one touchdown while catching seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown over nine games for the Patriots in 2020. The Georgia product doesn't catch many passes but could be excellent value as an RB3/4 in upcoming fantasy drafts if he becomes the Rams' primary running back.

Aug 26th · 11:26 PM
Sony Michel's Goal To Be Ready For Week 1

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel said his goal is to be ready for the Week 1 season opener after recently being traded from the New England Patriots to the Rams in light of Cam Akers' (Achilles) season-ending injury. The move to LA should give Michel more of an opportunity than he had in Bill Belichick's backfield behind Damien Harris. Akers is already out for the year and the oft-injured Darrell Henderson Jr. (thumb) is out for the rest of the preseason. Henderson should be the team's primary running back when healthy, but Michel is an upgrade over both Xavier Jones and Jake Funk in terms of pure ability and experience. Because of his lack of pass-catching skills, Michel doesn't offer much upside in PPR leagues. However, his stock is certainly up with the move to Los Angeles.

Aug 25th · 12:25 PM
Sony Michel Traded To The Rams

The New England Patriots traded running back Sony Michel to the Los Angeles Rams for 2022 fifth, and sixth-round draft picks. It can be converted to a fourth-round draft choice if the Rams get a compensatory pick. The Rams backfield has been hit with a slew of injuries during training camp (Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson) and acquired Michel for running back depth. He should have more opportunities with the Rams and could steal some early-down work from Darrell Henderson, who is currently nursing a thumb injury. Michel rushed for 449 yards on 79 carries and one touchdown while catching seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown over nine games for the Patriots in 2020. Despite the recent acquisition of Michel, Henderson (thumb) is the Rams running back fantasy managers should be targeting in their upcoming drafts.

Sony Michel Sees Action On Thursday

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel was able to see some playing time during their second preseason game versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Both J.J. Taylor and Rhamondre Stevenson stole the show on the ground. However, Michel was able to get involved with seven carries for 34 yards on the ground, which is a decent performance. Although, he really thrived in the receiving game with four receptions for 37 yards through the air. Michel becoming a dual-threat type of player is only going to help him in the long run. Honestly, Michel is in danger of losing his spot to these young backs, so he'll need to continue producing like this if he needs to stay involved every Sunday.

May 3rd · 09:02 PM
Patriots Decline Sony Michel's Option, Pick Up Isaiah Wynn's

The New England Patriots picked up the fifth-year option for the 2022 season on offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn on Monday. On the flip side, they declined the fifth-year option for running back Sony Michel. Michel was the 31st overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and would've made $4.523 million in 2022 had his option been picked up. He'll have a base salary of $1.79 million this year. He had 2,292 yards rushing on 535 carries and 14 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Pats, but he played in just nine games (six starts) due to injury in 2020 and rushed for only 449 yards and one score. Michel was barely used in the passing game as well. He'll return to a backfield committee with James White, Damien Harris and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson this year. Wynn was the No. 23 overall pick in 2018 and will make $10.413 million in 2022.

Jan 4th · 06:30 AM
Sony Michel Rushes For 76 Yards In Win

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel has not put together the season that he would've hoped for coming into the year. However, he did play fairly well during the regular season finale against the New York Jets. He rushed 16 times for 76 yards and caught three passes for 60 yards and one touchdown through the air. It was a nice way to end the season for someone who battled injuries throughout most of the year. Damien Harris was sidelined in Week 17, but appears to be the favorite for the lead back job next season. Michel will likely be off the fantasy radar in most formats heading into 2021.

Jan 2nd · 12:27 AM
Sony Michel A Possible RB3 In Week 17

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel has not shown much ability to move the ball on the ground since returning from injury. He has only produced one game with over 70 rushing yards or more in each of his last four games. The New York Jets have a decent run defense, so don't expect things to lean in Michel's favor. He should be considered a RB3 for the Week 17 matchup with the Jets.

Dec 29th · 06:06 AM
Sony Michel Looks Decent As Lead Back

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel received the start with Damien Harris (ankle) sidelined for the Week 16 matchup versus the Buffalo Bills. He rushed 10 times for 69 yards in the blowout loss. To be fair, Michel only saw 10 carries and the Patriots didn't run the ball much in the second half. Michel has looked decent on the ground over the last two weeks, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. He'll still be a borderline RB3 for the Week 17 matchup against the New York Jets.

Dec 24th · 06:07 PM
Sony Michel Unlikely To Produce Versus Bills

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel has failed to offer much production since returning from injury a few weeks ago. Damien Harris has run away with the lead back job, so Michel doesn't have much fantasy value right now. Michel hasn't seen more than 10 carries per week since returning from injury. It's unlikely that he'll be able to have reliable fantasy value versus the Buffalo Bills in Week 16. Michel will be avoidable in most formats for this week.

Dec 21st · 04:06 AM
Sony Michel Finishes With 74 Yards In Loss

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel had a surprisingly decent performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 15. He rushed 10 times for 74 yards in the loss. He caught his lone target for eight yards in the passing game. Michel was the lead back with Damien Harris (ankle) sidelined for this game. He played quite well, but the Pats couldn't get anything going in the passing game. Michel might be a low-end flex option versus the Buffalo Bills next week, but it depends on the health of Harris.

Dec 16th · 06:03 PM
Sony Michel Avoidable Versus Dolphins

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel has not looked the same since returning from injury two weeks ago. Damien Harris has run away with the lead back job, so Michel already has to deal with limited snaps in the backfield. Sadly, he hasn't been able to make the most of them and is a poor fantasy option heading into Week 15. The Miami Dolphins have done a solid job at stopping running backs this season. It's difficult to imagine Michel having fantasy value in just about any format right now.

Dec 11th · 04:39 AM
Sony Michel Invisible In Week 14

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel was unable to do much damage during the Week 14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He rushed seven times for 22 yards in this one. This was his second game back from injury and he remains the No. 2 option behind Damien Harris. It doesn't appear that Michel is going to have a significant role in this offense going forward. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect Michel to have basically any fantasy value for the rest of the season.

Dec 9th · 10:27 PM
Sony Michel Avoidable In Week 14

New England Patriots running back Sony Michel is looking like an avoidable option against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14. He returned last week and rushed 10 times for 35 yards in the win over the Los Angeles Chargers. It appears Damien Harris will remain the lead back, so Michel won't have a huge role in this offense. He won't be a great option even with significant carries against the Rams Defense. He'll be a desperation deep league option for Week 14.

Are NFL Trade Rumor Covered in the Player News?
Yes! As you can see from this Julio Jones write up from his player page, we updated his news section as soon as the news broke.
“The Atlanta Falcons are not expected to trade quarterback Matt Ryan this offseason, according to sources. “The Falcons have not had any trade conversations about Ryan or their star wide receiver Julio Jones. And every expectation is both players are going to be on the roster in 2021,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said. New head coach Arthur Smith plans to run a similar offense to the one Kyle Shanahan used when Ryan won MVP in 2016. Atlanta would be on the hook for more than $44 million in dead money in 2021 if they traded Ryan before June 1. Atlanta may decide to take Ryan’s heir-apparent at No. 4 overall in the draft, but the 35-year-old signal-caller is expected to stay put for at least another season. Ryan and Jones got it going to end the regular season and could be in line for bounce-back campaigns under Smith in 2021. Consider Ryan a midrange QB1 heading into next season.”
