Euro DFS Picks: Forwards/Midfielders

Dries Mertens (DraftKings $8,600, FanDuel $18)

Romelu Lukaku (DraftKings $9,900, FanDuel $21)

The final match of Saturday features Belgium hosting Russia. The odds seem to be influenced by the speculation that Kevin De Bruyne will miss the match, as was said by the Belgium manager. With this talent-filled, they still look good in this spot. Dries Mertens seems likely to handle the sets in De Bruyne absence, and he comes at a near $2,000 discount. In his six full-match runs, Mertens has scored twice but contributed five scoring chances. He sits third on the team in shot volume and should see an expected uptick without De Bruyne. The added responsibilities and open-play body of work make him a core play given the absence of De Bruyne.

Romelu Lukaku comes with the highest ask among the forwards. He takes on a Russia club that is coming into this match allowing one or fewer goals in one of their last six matches. Of note was impressive performances against Slovakia and Poland. The advantage for Lukaku is the last two meetings against Russia, Belgium posted three and four goals, respectively. Lukaku played in one of those matches and contributed on three of the four goals. Russia’s defense leaked eight on target chances, two to Lukaku. Eden Hazard scored twice and is also set to miss this match. Lukaku will control penalty sets and have license to fire away on a Russia side that is allowing 8.83 shots per competitive match in recent form, San Marino aside.

Rostering Lukaku, Mertens and key parts of other matches can leave one strapped for salary. Cheaper options on a heavy attacking Belgium squad come in the form of Youri Tielemans, Hans Vanaken and Thorgan Hazard. Tielemans is my preferred play given the outside metrics without goal contributions. With drawn fouls and a team-leading won tackles/interceptions, it is not hard for him to pay off the $5,800 asking price with a bit of added offense.

Christen Eriksen (DraftKings $8,200, FanDuel $16)

Christen Erikson will likely receive the highest ownership on the slate. He handles all sets for Denmark, which comes in as the biggest favorites. Eriksen leads his nation in overall scoring and 40% goal contribution. He has 3.29 shots per match in recent form. His floor is secured by the likes of Yussuf Poulsen and Thomas Delaney drawing over two fouls per match apiece and setting up any more of dead ball plays for Eriksen.

Finland bleeds goals. When compared to teams of similar offense to Denmark, such as Switzerland, they allowed three goals. That was a friendly tune-up match that did not go well, much like the defeats to Sweden and Estonia. They also have a Euro Qualifying defeat to Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was back in 2019.

The status of Robert Skov is unknown. Reports suggest he is not ready for this match. That should open up offensive volume for Andreas Skov Olsen. Skov Olsen comes in with a high asking price, but he is hard to ignore against at a plus matchup. Should the Bologna prospect not start, there is value in dropping to proven club vets such as Martin Braithwaite. Braithwaite ranks second on Denmark in scoring and shot volume. On a per-match run he leads the club in shot volume, edging out Eriksen.

Gareth Bale (DraftKings $8,000, FanDuel $20)

Daniel James (DraftKings $5,500, FanDuel $15)

The match between Wales and Switzerland looks like more of a coin flip. Switzerland is the favorites here, but Wales is a tough out at home. Gareth Bale is the pressing force offensively, with 3.55 shots per match and 44.4% on-target accuracy. He handles direct free kicks for his nation and the PK. The corner sets and indirect sets become the tricky part.

It looks like Harry Wilson will handle those for the most part, but Daniel James also is capable. The open-play volume and speed of James makes me lean on him for the near $1,000 savings. Both James and Wilson average over 1.5 shots per match and over five crosses.

Other Options: Teemu Pukki (DraftKings $7,800, FanDuel $17), Haris Seferovic (DraftKings $9,200, FanDuel $17), Harry Wilson (DraftKings $6,300, FanDuel $12), Robin Lod (DraftKings $4,900, FanDuel $7).

Euro DFS Picks: Defender

Ricardo Rodriguez (DraftKings $5,900, FanDuel $14)

Ricardo Rodriguez comes in too cheap in this matchup. The wingback delivers a barrage of aerial services for the Switzerland attackers to the tune of 6.86 per match. He ranks second in won tackles on the team and can add to his interception tally when Wales attempt to stretch the pitch. Rodriguez is an option on set pieces and sits second to Granit Xhaka in shot volume at 2.71 per match. Goal contribution is the upside here, and with a floor sitting at 1.5x value, he is a core play.

Other Options: Timothy Castagne (DraftKings $5,100, FanDuel $11), Neco Williams (DraftKings $4,500, FanDuel $9), Joakim Maehle (DraftKings $5,400, FanDuel $6).

Top Goalkeepers

Thibault Courtois (DraftKings $5,500, FanDuel $12)

Kasper Schmeichel (DraftKings $5,800, FanDuel $13)
