Early-Slate Picks

Toronto Blue Jays vs. LHP John Means – 5.3 implied runs

The early games are all over the place with a mix of doubleheaders. This game is on the all-day slates for Yahoo and FanDuel and will likely crop up as part of an afternoon game-set or single game contests on DraftKings. After being Baltimore’s All-Star Game representative with a solid rookie campaign, Means has been more pedestrian in the followup season. While he does not allowed a ton of power, he has given up a home run in all but one of his nine starts and a pair in three of them. For the season he has 33 strikeouts in 37.1 innings but he notched a dozen in his last appearance against Tampa Bay.

Look to the batters swinging the stick from the right-side of the plate for the playoff bound Blue Jays. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.is the familiar name, but Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel and Bo Bichette are all above average when facing southpaws.

Main-Slate Picks

Kansas City Royals vs. LHP Matthew Boyd – 5.0 implied runs

This has been a disaster of a season for Boyd who has allowed 14 home runs in 54.1 innings and now leads the league with 80 since the beginning of the 2018 season and he is first with 53 since the beginning of last year.

Adalberto Mondesi has been red hot with 10 runs, eight steals and a .385/.429/.564 slash line in his last 39 at bats. He leads the league in steals and has four in his last two games. Whit Merrifield is running as well with a steal in each of his last two outings and he just two behind Trevor Story for second place. The Royals are out of it, so keep that in mind as these guys go for some personal milestones.

Maikel Franco and Hunter Dozier have the raw power that can bring us some serious upside against a pitcher like Boyd. Salvador Perez is a great contrarian option on FanDuel as gamers hate to play catchers there. On Yahoo and DraftKings he is worth the premium price to fill that required slot. Journeyman Ryan McBroom has played for six minor league teams, appeared in both the Mexican and Dominican leagues and spent two years at West Virginia. He is a fine discount dandy that can help average out the price tags of the other Kansas City batsmen.

Late-Slate Picks

San Diego Padres at RHP Johnny Cueto – 5.0 implied runs

The Giants have a 50/50 chance to nab the eighth and final playoff spot in the National League. They are battling with the Brewers and Phillies who are each one game back. Currently there is not a listed pitcher but this would be the spot for Cueto, though it could also be LHP Drew Smyly with the other going on Sunday. With Friday’s doubleheader and Thursday’s 11-inning game the San Fran bullpen has contributed 12.0 innings in the last 48 hours with everyone except Wandy Peralta seeing action. Yesterday 20 runs were scored across 14 innings and the magic of Oracle Park continues to provide offense.

If it is Cueto getting the start then we will want to focus on Trent Grisham, Eric Hosmer and Mitch Moreland with Jake Cronenworth as a differentiation option. If we get Smyly then it will be Austin Nola and Wil Myers who move ahead of that quartet. Regardless of who is on the bump, Fernando Tatis Jr. Manny Machado and Tommy Pham are the trio to target.
