Top MLB DFS Value Plays

Gerrit Cole – Yankees vs. Phillies – FanDuel $11,000, DraftKings $11,000

Cole hasn’t exactly been dominant to start the season, but he definitely hasn’t been bad either. Through two starts, Cole has gone a total of 11.2 innings while striking out 12 and allowing four earned runs. I expect his third start to be his best yet, as he faces off with the Phillies in Yankee Stadium. Cole is due for a huge strikeout performance, and this is certainly a team that can help him deliver one. The Phillies struck out nearly 24% of the time against righties in 2019 and haven’t looked any better early this season.

Cole is more expensive than Jacob deGrom on FanDuel with the reverse on DraftKings, which will mix ownership around quite a bit. Awesemo projects Cole as the top arm on the slate, and I fully agree. The matchup is not only better for him, but I suspect folks will shy away from Cole after back-to-back relatively disappointing performances. He’ll cost you an arm and leg on both sites, but this could very well be a classic Cole performance that breaks the slate.

Jacob deGrom – Mets at Braves – FanDuel $10,700, DraftKings $11,600

Much like Cole, the first two starts of the season haven’t been great for the former Cy Young Award winner. He’s struck out 12 through 11 innings and hasn’t picked up a single win. deGrom deserves plenty of attention on this slate, however, and he’ll likely be even lower owned than Cole with similar upside.

We know deGrom can slice through any lineup with ease and this Braves squad isn’t one to be afraid of. While a top-10 wOBA squad, they also struck at a top-10 clip and only added more strikeouts in the offseason. DeGrom should get back to his 10-strikeout norm tonight, and my best guess is we will see a dominant performance out of both of these aces. I’m a fan of both in all formats, and it all comes down to price and roster construction.

Frankie Montas – Athletics at Mariners – FanDuel $7,700, DraftKings $7,200

Montas has struggled with command in each of his first two starts, walking five through just nine innings. If he can get his fastball honed in, Montas could very well walk away as the best value on the slate. He has already been stretched out and will see close to 100 pitches if all goes well. Montas sported a 3.47 xFIP and struck out 9.66 batters per nine innings.

Montas draws a dream matchup, facing off with the Seattle Mariners in the spacious T-Mobile Park. It’s by far his easiest matchup yet, and six or seven clean innings is a fair projection. Awesemo projects Montas as one of the best values at any position on tonight’s slate, and he’s an excellent play in both cash games and tournaments. On DraftKings, he’s my favorite SP2 next to Cole as your lead dog.

Top MLB DFS GPP Target

Carlos Rodon – White Sox at Brewers – FanDuel $6,600, DraftKings $7,000

Rodon should always be on your GPP radar, as he can strikeout 10 in any given matchup. The Brewers only amplify that, as they seem to either demolish or get shut down. They struck out at a massive 24% clip in 2019 and are worse against lefties.

If Rodon is on his game, he can strikeout two per inning through five or six and pick up the win. He’s extremely cheap on both sites and opens up the rest of your lineup to do whatever you would like. To be clear, steer clear of Rodon in cash games and get over the field in tourneys.
