Slate Action

Greeting Gamers! We have a couple weather spots to keep an eye on in Baltimore and Atlanta, plus the debut of Coors Field.

Similar to last year I will be providing a review of one stack for the main slate as well as the viable sub-slates with at least two games on the docket. Some of these short-slate options will be good for the full-game set, others will be more contrarian and better suited for the mini-game sets.

Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

New York Yankees vs. RHP Ryan Weber – 6.7 implied runs

If you have been following my daily column for the last few years, you know I usually do not discuss the mega-chalk stacks because those are generally well covered elsewhere. Today is a little bit of a departure from that as there are a plethora of amazing options.

The Yankees will be back at home in the Bronx hosting the Red Sox. Weber was hammered in his first start, allowing six earned runs and two home runs in just 65 pitches against the Orioles. Weber has a 2.25 HR/9 against the last 115 lefties he has faced. The only saving grace on Friday is that the Yankees may only have two or three in the lineup. Keep in mind that Weber is not a spring chicken, having kicked around in MiLB since 2009. This is the sixth different season he has appeared in The Show, but he has just 118.0 innings with a 5.04 ERA and a low 5.67 K/9 for results.

Gleyber Torres left in the first inning after being hit by a pitch last night, so keep an eye on his status. Look to lefties Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks first. However, they will not be next to each other in the lineup, so do not be afraid to connect the dots with Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Luke Voit and, of course, Torres if he is in the lineup.

Coors Field Extravaganza Picks

San Diego Padres at RHP Jon Gray – 6.0 implied runs

Colorado Rockies vs. RHP Garrett Richards – 6.2 implied runs

This matchup is going to be a magnet on any slate that includes it on Friday. It has been nearly 10 months since we have had Coors Field impacting our DFS player pool. Let us all savor that for just a moment.

Each of the sites is handling pricing differently:

  • Yahoo: did a good job pricing up the key options
  • FanDuel: just four projected starters above $4,000
  • DraftKings: seems to have done the best job as they also priced up the Yankees, Athletics, Astros, Diamondbacks and White Sox.

Richards has managed to make only 31 starts over the prior four seasons after a series of injuries. He has always flashed talent, but has never been able to stay healthy. We can toss out his sterling career 3.57 ERA and target him with the usual suspects.

Gray has been able to survive in Coors Field allowing a 4.00 ERA, 3.44 xFIP and 1.07 HR/9 in his last 209.1 innings in the thin air. However, this is a power-laden Padres team and the Rockies bullpen is not intimidating. Look to the new Friars first with Fernando Tatis, Manny Machado, Trent Grisham, Tommy Pham and Jurickson Profar leading the way with their collective light tower power.

Late-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Oakland Athletics at RHP Taijuan Walker – 5.2 implied runs

What’s old is new again. Walker is back with the team that made him the 43rd overall selection in the 2010 draft. Walker was dealt to the D’Backs in 2016 with Ketel Marte for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis. His first year in the desert was solid, but he only made four starts over the last two seasons due to an elbow injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery. Prior to his injury, he had tantalizing talent, but he was never able to put it all together.

Our primary target should be Matt Olson who has a .261 ISO in his last 844 plate appearances against righties. Next up are Mark Canha and Matt Chapman with their double-digit walk rates and .192 and .257 respective ISO marks compiled over the last two seasons. Feel free to extend your stacks with Marcus Semien, Ramon Laureano, Khris Davis and Stephen Piscotty. Just make sure you give the initial power trio the first look.
