Yankees’ Zach Britton On Team Bringing Back Domestic-Abuser Domingo German: ‘You Don’t Get To Control Who Your Teammates Are’

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German is back at Spring Training with the team after missing the entire 2020 season. German was suspended for violating the league’s domestic violence rules.

Fellow pitch Zach Britton was asked about the return of Domingo German, and offered this thoughtful response.

“I don’t think he owes anything to me. I think it’s off the field stuff that he needs to take care of,” Britton said in a Zoom interview (via nj.com) when asked about German returning. “Sometimes you don’t get to control who your teammates are, and that’s the situation. I don’t agree with what he did. I don’t think it has any place in the game or off the field at all.”

“My job is to go out there and pitch and do my job,” Britton added. “So that’s kind of what my concern is right there. But [German] doesn’t owe me anything. I think that’s something that he’s going to have to deal with on his own and make better choices going forward.”

Good for Zach Britton. He could have offered the “no comment”, or said all the “right” things about the return of Domingo German. Instead, he took the time to share how he really feels. Sometimes its refreshing to hear professional athletes speak their minds about certain things. I know it would be hard for me to share a locker room with a guy coming off a domestic violence charge. I think it would be for anyone.
